Facebook Addiction

I wanted to look at articles about people who are addicted to social networking after I heard on the news awhile back about a mother who neglected her children for weeks while she was on the internet. The first article is from CNN. It has another story of a mother who wouldn't help her daughter with homework because she was "busy" facebooking. the article quotes a boss who had three problems with employees using facebook during the workday in one week. The article explains what users should look out for as signs of addiction: You lose sleep over facebook, you spend more than an hour a day on facebook, you become obsessed with old loves, you ignore work in favor of facebook, the thought of leaving facebook leaves you in a cold sweat. I found several other websites that actually treat facebook addiction as a serious disease, just like alcoholism and drug addiction. ex.http://www.addictioninfo.org/articles/2171/1/Potential-Facebook-addiction/Page1.html. Personally i don't think spending an hour on facebook a day would qualify someone as being addicted, mostly because it is just another way of keeping in touch and talking to people. If someone spent an hour a day talking on the phone or talking to people in person you wouldn't say they were addicted to anything.

That's super funny. I agree that an hour a day is fine, it just like watching an hour of tv or something. But who ignores their children to play farmville or something ridiculous like that on facebook? I guess someone really could be addicted to facebook but I find the idea that someone thinking about leaving facebook would break into a "cold sweat" is just sad. Are we really that controllable?
ReplyDeletei can completely relate. since my computer is crashed and being repaired, i had to use my parents' computer to do my homework over the weekend.. well i was doing my homework, like a good college student, and my parents made me get off so that they could harvest their crops on farmville. at the same time, my two-year old brother had to go to the bathroom, and they told him to wait while they finished harvesting.
ReplyDeleteit's ridiculous how even grown 30 and 40-year old adults are addicted.
addiction to the internet, especially to facebook is most definitely possible. as ridiculous as that may seem, i think we all can be slightly admit that we are guilty as charged. i most definately probably spend more than an hour on facebook a day, and i am not even a member of farmville..so i can only imagine those who are members how addicted they may be. i think it is absurd how reliant and obsessed we as a world wide society have all become on the internet...but it has happened and will only increase, and get worse. so why bother talking about it when we know it wont be prevented?
